Every trip that visits Gilgit, whatever its length or style.

Two full days in the valley, with Attabad, Passu and the Karimabad forts.

The complete Hunza trip — the valley, the border pass and Naltar's coloured lakes.

The full Karakoram circuit — both great valleys and the plateau between them.
Gilgit is where every northern road meets — the Karakoram Highway from Islamabad, the Hunza road north, the Skardu road east, and the Shandur track west. Most people pass through it, but it is worth a night of its own.
Just south of town at Juglot is the point where the Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush ranges meet, marked by a viewpoint above the confluence of the Indus and Gilgit rivers. The Kargah Buddha, carved into a cliff in the seventh century, is twenty minutes out of town.
Naltar Valley is the real reason to stop. An hour and a half by jeep from Gilgit brings you to pine forest, a small ski lift, and three lakes whose colours change with the light. It is usually sold as a Hunza add-on and deserves better.
Usually not on its own — it works best as part of a Hunza itinerary with a night here for Naltar. If you are flying in, Gilgit is your arrival point and a good base.
Jeep only, about 90 minutes from Gilgit on rough track. Coasters cannot do it. The jeep is included on our packages that list Naltar.
More reliably than Skardu, but still weather-dependent. We will book it if you ask, with a road plan behind it.
