Azad Kashmir tours in Pakistan

Neelum Valley runs 200 km northeast from Muzaffarabad along the river, with the Line of Control on the far bank for most of it. It is the closest genuine mountain valley to Lahore and Islamabad, and the most underrated one in the country.

The trip builds along the road: Keran, then Sharda, then Kel, with Arang Kel above it — a village on a shelf at 2,700 m reached by chairlift and a steep walk, and the single most photographed place in Kashmir. Ratti Gali Lake is a separate full-day jeep-and-trek expedition from Dowarian. Taobat, at the very end of the road, is another five hours beyond Kel.

Four days gets you to Arang Kel comfortably. Five or six days adds Ratti Gali or Taobat. The road is narrow throughout and the last stretches are jeep-only, so this is a trip where the vehicle matters more than the hotel.

What you see on a Azad Kashmir trip

  • Arang Kel — chairlift and a 45-minute climb to the meadow village
  • Ratti Gali Lake at 3,700 m
  • Sharda and the ruins of Sharda Peeth
  • Keran, facing the Line of Control
  • Taobat, the last village on the road
  • Kutton and the Jagran valley

Azad Kashmir: what to know before you book

How difficult is Arang Kel?

There is a chairlift across the river from Kel, then a steep 45–60 minute walk up. Horses are available. Most reasonably fit people manage it; it is not suitable for anyone with knee problems or for very small children.

Is Ratti Gali a day trip?

It is a long one. Jeep from Dowarian to base camp takes around three hours on rough track, then a 45-minute walk. Start at dawn and expect to get back late. It is worth it.

Do I need any permit for Neelum Valley?

Pakistani nationals need CNIC and pass through several army checkposts where names are registered. Foreign nationals need a permit arranged in advance — tell us at booking and we will handle it.

Is there mobile signal?

Patchy. SCOM and Jazz work in the larger villages. Above Kel, assume nothing works. Tell your family before you go.

What about the Line of Control?

The valley has been quiet and open to tourism for years and the road is used daily by locals and visitors. Our itineraries keep to the established tourist route and our drivers know the checkpost procedure.
