Fairy Meadows tours in Pakistan

Fairy Meadows is a grass shelf at 3,300 m looking directly at the Rakhiot face of Nanga Parbat, the ninth-highest mountain on earth. There is no road to it. You leave the Karakoram Highway at Raikot Bridge, take a jeep up one of the more exposed mountain tracks in Pakistan to Tato, and then walk three to four kilometres uphill.

That walk is the whole point and also the thing most operators do not mention. It takes most people about two hours with a daypack. Porters and horses are available at Tato and we quote the rate honestly rather than springing it on you at the trailhead.

From the meadows, the full-day hike to Beyal Camp and the Nanga Parbat viewpoint is what you came for — roughly 12 to 14 km round trip with the mountain in front of you the whole way. Accommodation is wooden huts and tents with shared bathrooms. It is basic, it is cold at night even in July, and it is the best night's view in the country.

What you see on a Fairy Meadows trip

  • Nanga Parbat, 8,126 m, from the Rakhiot face
  • The Raikot Bridge to Tato jeep track
  • Beyal Camp and the Nanga Parbat viewpoint hike
  • Nanga Parbat Base Camp for stronger walkers
  • Night skies with no light pollution at 3,300 m

Fairy Meadows: what to know before you book

How hard is the walk to Fairy Meadows?

Three to four kilometres, uphill, about two hours at an easy pace. It is a walk, not a climb, but it cannot be skipped and there is no vehicle access. Horses and porters are available at Tato at a published rate.

Is the jeep track dangerous?

It is narrow, unpaved and exposed, and it is the reason some people choose not to come. The drivers are local specialists who do this route daily. If anyone in your group has a serious fear of heights, they should know before booking.

What is the accommodation like?

Wooden huts and permanent tents with shared bathrooms and limited hot water. There is electricity for a few hours in the evening. The photos on this page are of the actual huts we use, not a stock image of a resort.

Is there mobile signal at Fairy Meadows?

No. None. Tell your family you will be out of contact for a night or two.

Who should not book this trip?

Children under 8, anyone with knee or heart conditions, and anyone who cannot walk uphill for two hours. We would rather tell you now than at Tato.
