Kumrat tours in Pakistan

Kumrat is the valley that went from unknown to everyone's list in about five years, and the reason is the forest. Kumrat is deodar cedar down to the riverbank, with the Panjkora running through it, and wooden huts built right among the trees. It feels nothing like the bare high valleys further north.

The drive is long — nine to ten hours via Dir and Thal, with the last stretch on jeep track. Most trips are three or four days: one to get there, one in the valley, one to come back, with an optional extra day for Jahaz Banda and Katora Lake.

Jahaz Banda is the effort trip. A jeep to Thal, then a two to three hour climb to the meadow, and from there another two hours to Katora Lake. Camp overnight if you can — it is the best part of the valley and a day trip from Kumrat makes it a rush.

What you see on a Kumrat trip

Kumrat: what to know before you book

How long is the drive to Kumrat?

Nine to ten hours from Islamabad via Timergara, Dir and Thal, with the last 20 km on rough jeep track. It is a long day and we break it properly.

Is Jahaz Banda worth the climb?

Yes, and it is a real climb — two to three hours uphill from Thal. Horses are available. If you can spare the night, camping at Jahaz Banda and walking to Katora Lake the next morning is the best version of this trip.

What is the accommodation like?

Wooden huts and tented camps by the river. Comfortable and clean but simple — no air conditioning, limited hot water, patchy electricity. That is the trade for sleeping in the forest.

When is Kumrat open?

May to October. Snow closes the Thal road in winter and the jeep tracks well before that.
