The greenest valley and the shortest drive — Kalam, Mahodand and Malam Jabba.
Swat is the greenest of the northern valleys and the easiest to reach — five hours from Islamabad on good motorway most of the way. It is also the only one with a real ski resort, which makes it the strongest winter product in the country outside Murree.
The standard trip runs Mingora to Bahrain to Kalam, with a day up the Ushu valley to Mahodand Lake and a day at Malam Jabba for the chairlift and the zipline. Utror and Gabral are quieter alternatives above Kalam for people who have already done the main road.
Swat works all year, which few northern destinations do. Summer is lush and busy, autumn is quiet and beautiful, and December to February brings snow to Malam Jabba and Kalam. The one seasonal limit is Mahodand, where the track is open roughly May to October.
Five to six hours to Mingora on motorway and the Swat expressway, then another two and a half to Kalam on mountain road. It is the shortest drive of any of the big northern valleys.
Yes, and it is one of the few places that is. Malam Jabba has the country's best ski slope, and Kalam under snow is spectacular. Mahodand is closed in winter and the Kalam road can need 4x4 after heavy snowfall.
Yes, from Kalam. It is about 35 km of rough track up the Ushu valley and it takes around 90 minutes each way. Included on our packages.
Yes. Swat has been stable for well over a decade and is one of the most visited domestic destinations in Pakistan. There is a normal police and army presence on the main roads, and checkpoints where you show CNIC.
