10 Days Hunza, Khunjerab, Skardu & Deosai Circuit

10 days / 9 nightsIslamabad – Chilas – Hunza – Khunjerab – Naltar – Skardu – Shigar – Khaplu – Deosai – IslamabadMax 18 peopleLate June to SeptemberModerateMax altitude 4,693 m at Khunjerab Pass

The full Karakoram circuit — both great valleys and the plateau between them.

Overview

This is the whole thing. Ten days covers Hunza with Khunjerab and Naltar, then across to Skardu for Shigar, Khaplu and a full Deosai crossing, with enough slack that a weather delay does not wreck the plan.

Two regions in one trip usually means rushing both. It does not here, because the two long driving days sit at the start and the end, and there are two or three nights in each valley rather than one.

It runs late June to September only, because Deosai does. Groups are capped at eighteen and it sells out early.

Trip highlights

  • Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m
  • Attabad Lake, Passu Cones and the Karimabad forts
  • Naltar Valley and its coloured lakes, by jeep
  • Deosai plateau and Sheosar Lake at 4,114 m
  • Shigar Fort and Khaplu Palace
  • Shangrila and the Katpana cold desert
  • Sunrise at Duikar over Rakaposhi

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 days too long in a coaster?

It is 62 hours of driving over ten days, but only two of those days are long. Most days are three to seven hours with stops, and there are three nights in Hunza and three in Skardu.

Why does this only run in summer?

Because of Deosai, which is snowbound from roughly October to mid-June. Outside that window we run Hunza and Skardu as separate trips.

Can we fly one leg?

Skardu to Islamabad on the last day is the popular option and saves a twelve-hour drive. It is weather-dependent and quoted separately.

How fit do I need to be?

There is no compulsory walking beyond short strolls. The demand is tolerance for long jeep days and two days above 4,000 m.

How early should I book?

Early. There are only three departures a year and they usually fill two to three months ahead.
