Astore & Deosai tours in Pakistan

Deosai is the second-highest plateau in the world — 3,000 square kilometres of rolling grassland above 4,000 m, snowbound for eight months of the year and covered in wildflowers for the other four. It is also the last stronghold of the Himalayan brown bear.

You can cross Deosai from Skardu or from Astore. The Astore side gives you Rama Meadows and Rama Lake first, with Nanga Parbat's eastern face behind them, then the climb onto the plateau to Sheosar Lake at 4,114 m.

This is a summer-only trip and a short season. Snow usually clears the tracks in mid-June and returns by late September. It is also cold, remote and high — there are no facilities on the plateau and mobile coverage is nil. Come prepared and it is one of the great landscapes in Asia.

What you see on a Astore & Deosai trip

  • Deosai National Park and the plateau crossing
  • Sheosar Lake at 4,114 m
  • Rama Meadows and Rama Lake
  • Nanga Parbat's eastern face from Astore
  • Minimarg and Domail, for those going further
  • Himalayan brown bear and marmot country

Astore & Deosai: what to know before you book

When is Deosai open?

Roughly mid-June to mid-September. Outside that, the tracks are under snow. We will not sell you a Deosai date we do not believe will be open.

How high is it and does that matter?

Sheosar Lake is at 4,114 m and the crossing stays above 4,000 m for hours. Most people feel only mild breathlessness. Anyone with heart or breathing conditions should consult a doctor. We carry oxygen.

Is there anywhere to stay on the plateau?

Camping only, and we arrange it properly with proper sleeping bags — nights on Deosai are near freezing in July. Most itineraries cross in a day and sleep in Skardu or Astore.

Can I see the brown bears?

Sometimes, at distance, usually early morning. Marmots are guaranteed. We do not promise bears, and anyone who does is selling you something.
