7 Days Hunza, Khunjerab Pass & Naltar Valley Tour

7 days / 6 nightsIslamabad – Chilas – Karimabad – Khunjerab – Naltar – Chilas – IslamabadMax 20 peopleMay to OctoberEasyMax altitude 4,693 m at Khunjerab Pass

The complete Hunza trip — the valley, the border pass and Naltar's coloured lakes.

Overview

This is the Hunza trip we recommend when someone has a full week. Seven days covers the valley properly, adds Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m — the highest paved border crossing in the world — and includes a full jeep day in Naltar Valley, which most itineraries leave out entirely.

Naltar is the reason to choose this over the six-day version. Ninety minutes of jeep track from Gilgit brings you to pine forest and three lakes whose colour changes with the light. It is the single best add-on in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Nothing about this itinerary is rushed. Three nights in Karimabad means you are unpacked, and the two hard driving days sit at either end where they belong.

Trip highlights

  • Attabad Lake, Passu Cones and Hussaini Bridge
  • Baltit and Altit forts in Karimabad
  • Sunrise from Duikar / Eagle's Nest
  • Borith Lake and the Passu glacier

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for Khunjerab Pass?

Pakistani nationals need only their CNIC. There is a Khunjerab National Park fee, which we include. Foreign nationals should carry a passport.

How will I feel at 4,693 m?

Most people feel mildly breathless and nothing more, because we go up and come straight back down rather than sleeping high. We carry oxygen. Anyone with a heart or breathing condition should speak to a doctor first.

Is Khunjerab always open?

No. Snow usually closes it from December to March, and it can close briefly at other times. On affected departures we substitute Naltar or Hopper Glacier and tell you in advance.

Why is Naltar a separate jeep day?

Because a coaster cannot get up the track. We bring in local 4x4s for the day, which is included in your price rather than charged at the trailhead.

Is this suitable for older travellers?

Generally yes, with the caveat about altitude on the Khunjerab day. There is no compulsory walking on this itinerary.
